I’ve sinned for too long now. Called myself a die-hard foodie and haven’t yet been to the the most top-rated restaurant in Pune. Well, that changed yesterday. Finally dragged my ass to Le plaisir.
Located near Deccan Gymkhana, Le Plaisir is a mid-sized cafe type set-up that seats customers at 2 levels. With it’s blackboard menu and hand-sanitizers on each table, Le Plaisir sets off a totally different vibe.
Even though we reached at 7.15, we had to wait 15 minutes to get a table. After checking out the menu on the blackboard, we settled on the ‘Carrot, sweet potato soup, spicy oats, jalapenos’ and the much recommended ‘Three cheese pasta, smoked cheddar’.
1. Carrot, sweet potato soup, spicy oats, jalapenos – There were 2 main reasons to order this soup. First of all, the combination of ingredients was unlike any other I had seen in Pune. Secondly, I was really curious as to what justifies them pricing a soup at 300 bucks! The soup arrived on a large plate. A thick carrot base, crispy sweet potato juliennes, pieces of jalapenos and a sprinkling of oats. This was by far the most comforting soup I had had in my entire life. The perfect winter dinner – enough to fill you up! I highly recommend this dish to all vegetarians.
2. Three cheese pasta, smoked cheddar – I hate it when you price a plate of pasta at 400 bucks, and then expect me to pay 50 bucks extra for veggies. I’ve always believed that cost should be incorporated into the cost of the main dish and just ask to choose the option. Anyways, that’s that. Coming to the dish, it looked beautiful.. And yes, it did taste lovely. The crunchy assorted veggies perfectly complemented the silky cheese sauce. Overall, we enjoyed the dish (though the soup wins for me).
3. Lavender sea-salt macaroon – Skipped dessert since we were overfull with the food. But how could leave without a macaroon? The strong lavender flavor along with the salty toffee filling was a perfect end to a great meal.
I’m usually too critical to enjoy every dish that I have at a meal, but Le Plaisir was one of the exceptions. The only qualm I have is, why shut at 9.45pm? They should consider keeping it open until 11pm. The 9.45 deadline makes it impossible for us to ever catch a weekday dinner here.
To conclude, Le Plaisir serves great food, at slightly higher prices; but is surely worth every penny.
